Figuring out where AI fits is its own piece of work.
Understand is the practice of working out where, how, and whether AI actually belongs in your business or system, before anything gets built. It is not a sales call, and it is not phase one of a build you have already agreed to.
A standing practice, not a qualification call.
Most places offering “discovery” fold it into the first week of a build you have already committed to. Understand is scoped and sold on its own. You can engage it, get real clarity, and stop there — there is no obligation to buy Build or Secure from us afterward.
It is also not a one-off. A business changes, and so does what AI can actually do for it, so what made sense six months ago may not now. Understand is built to be revisited, not closed out the moment a document is delivered.
You keep a real document, not a conversation.
An Understand engagement produces a workspace document, not a slide deck or a call recap. It states, plainly enough to actually build against:
- Operator — who is accountable for what this does
- Boundary — what it is, and is not, allowed to touch
- Inputs — what it is allowed to read or receive
- Outputs — what it is allowed to produce or act on
- Review point — when this gets looked at again, on purpose, rather than left to drift
It belongs to you. Use it with us, with someone else, or on your own — that is what makes it a real artifact rather than advice you have to remember correctly.
The same method is documented in public in Field Notes.
Anyone, at any technical level, at any size.
Solo operators, small teams, and larger organisations alike — if you are exposed to real consequences from an AI system making decisions in the world, this is for you, whether or not you can read the code it runs on.
Said plainly, because it needs saying plainly: we do not have unlimited capacity to run deep engagements for everyone at once. What we commit to is not structurally excluding you for being small or non-technical. We would rather take on fewer engagements and do them properly than say yes to everyone and do it badly.
A free conversation, before anything is paid for.
The first step is a free fit conversation. We ask what you are trying to do, and we tell you honestly whether we think we can actually help, before you spend anything. If the honest answer is no, we say so, rather than taking the work anyway.
Tell us the situation.
No pitch, no obligation — just an honest read on whether Understand is worth your time right now.
